What is Forestry England?
England’s largest land manager, Forestry England is an executive agency that looks after the nation’s 1,500 woods and forests. Sponsored by the Forestry Commision, all of their income is put back into creating gorgeous forests for people and wildlife to enjoy simultaneously.
Did you know that forests are one of our most demanded filming locations? Dotted across the county, Forestry England’s woodland and forest locations have a range of features that attract filmmakers and photographers again and again. From tall trees to heathland, from lakes to ponds, from iron mining pits to trenches, there is so much variety for any production!

Birchden Rock
Nestled just south of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Birchden Wood stands as a fantastic filming location. Acting as a gateway for the renowned Harrison’s Rocks, the picturesque location boasts not only natural beauty, but also practical amenities such as 16 camping pitches, fire and bbq facilities, and a convenient toilet block & car park.
Abbot’s Wood
Close to Polegate, Abbot’s Wood offers an idyllic setting, ideal for capturing natural beauty. As well as providing practical amenities such as picnic tables and BBQ facilities, the landscape is also home to a gorgeous medieval lake, spilling over a small waterfall into a gentle stream with a small bridge across it, a gorgeous scene that beckons filmmakers and photographers alike.
Battle Great Wood
Battle Great Wood is located just outside the historical town of Battle and is part of the 1066 walk. This expansive 200-acre woodland encompasses a diverse landscape, featuring eucalyptus trees from Australia and New Zealand, heathland, and meandering streams. As one of the 15 ancient woodlands in the High Weald, and with historic connections to Battle Abbey, this is an inspiring backdrop for filming.
Tilgate Forest
Spanning 367 acres of dense woodland, Tilgate Forest boasts intriguing features such as sunken trenches, a charming stream and bridge, and private tracks. The presence of the distinctive electricity pylon creates a more dystopian backdrop, making it an exciting location for filmmakers and photographers.
St Leonard’s Forest
Part of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, to the east of Horsham, St Leonard’s Forest isn’t short of fascinating history. Legend has it that a French hermit once lived here in the sixth century…
Rich in historical allure, the site is also home to a number of former iron mine pits that were closed in the late 1800s, a perfect canvas for creative endeavours.
